Adobe Flash Player is the official free app from Adobe that lets you watch Flash videos and play Flash games on your computer or hand held device.

If you’ve played one of those fun little browser games in the last 15 years, you’ve used Adobe Flash Player! The Flash Player is the official app from Adobe that makes flash videos, games and applications work on any device with a browser.

You’ll need the Flash Player to run some Facebook games, watch Flash video on sites like DiscoverChannel and HBOgo, and to run interfaces on millions of websites across the web. This app also runs as a background process, so you won’t have to worry about accidentally closing it or it eating through your battery when you’re not using it.

It’s important to point out that the Flash Player automatically updates, usually 2-3x a week to stay up to date and patch security vulnerabilities. You won’t have to worry about downloading updates on your own and you’ll know that your device is always secure.

We have to point out that while the Adobe Flash Player is mostly secure, there are some problems. After Android 4.0 (a.k.a. “Ice Cream Sandwich”) Adobe stopped all support for the Android OS. This means that if you’re running a newer version of the OS this might not work on your device.

It’s no secret that the app can sometimes expose users to major security risks, even with updates. There’s been a major shift to HTML5 video (especially on sites like YouTube) over the last few years to counter this, and because the file size for HTML5 video is a lot smaller than bloated Flash apps.

All in all, Adobe Flash Player is still an essential tool to browse the web for those that can get it to work. If you download it you’ll be able to play games, watch videos and more – but in most cases you’ll still be able to do that without the Flash player too.

Pros

  • Get Access to Lots of Free Content It’s no secret that the modern web was built on Flash! While many sites have moved on to HTML5 video, many sites still require Flash to work properly.
  • Updates Automatically The Flash app will update automatically, so you’ll never have to worry about trying to stay up to date with the latest security flaws or builds.

Cons

  • Android 4.0+ No Longer Supports Flash If you’re running an Android device Ice Cream Sandwich or higher, this will not work on your device. Adobe abandoned Flash development for Android after this point, sadly.
  • Known Malware Risk Many modern browsers and devices have disabled Flash because it’s extremely susceptible to hack attacks and code injections – this basically means it’s not always safe to run Flash apps on your device.
